About CARPOOL
Basics of CARPOOL
CARPOOL is a student-run safe ride program at Texas A&M University that provides free, safe, and non-judgmental rides to the Bryan/College Station community. We operate during the hours of 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
The service has been providing safe rides home since September 16, 1999, when it was started by founder Jeff Schiefelbein.
CARPOOL is possible through the dedication of its 275 student volunteers. Members are selected through an application and interview process at the end of every semester. At the beginning of every semester, members are trained on the basics of CARPOOL, defensive driving, and basic first aid.
What to look for is a ride
Every CARPOOL member will have a T-Shirt and a current ID card.
How CARPOOL Operates
CARPOOL runs out of a four bedroom apartment as its headquarters. Members arrive before operations and are reminded about key points from training. They then hang out and eat food provided by our generous Sponsors.
When someone dials CARPOOL (693-9905), the calls are routed to one of three phones, and basic information is taken from the patron. This is so that we may identify the ride when we arrive. A guy and a girl are sent out in an Enterprise Rent-A-Car to pick up the patron(s) and take them home.
